Infiorata - Italy in Bloom

In June, in a little town in Italy called Genzano di Roma (South of Rome), when the flowers are at its most beautiful and the townsfolk are sufficiently captivated, everybody puts on their creative hats and celebrates Infiorata, the flower arts festival.
During Infiorata, houses are decorated with different kinds of flowers, so much so that colors fill the whole town. The main attraction of this festival is the decoration of a town street using seeds and petals. This chosen street of Genzano is basically turned into a long and colorful garden.
When Infiorata is celebrated, the citizens of Genzano decide on a theme. And then they gather everything they need. They visit their own gardens and pick all the flowers. They also usually have to search the woods in order to come up with the right number of petals and seeds. The night before the festival, they design an outline on the chosen street using chalk, and then they cover the outline with soil and decorate the street with seeds and flowers. When the day of the festival dawns on the town of Genzano, the street is already a sight to behold: a street "carpeted" with flowers of different colors. The Italian flag is hoisted proud and high, and the Infiorata has begun.
Some say the best way to enjoy the sight is by looking at the street from balconies, from a high vantage point. While others insist that it is much better to appreciate the artistic presentation while walking along the flower designs on the road.
This community affair, Infiorata, has been celebrated by the people of the town since the year 1778.
